Too many coffee shops opening up. Lost count of the number in SE23.
A couple of decades ago there was no coffee shop culture here & then American TV imports like "Friends" came along & suddenly we all wanted to sit on sofas with our friends and drink coffee.
Has coffee turned out to be the new wine ?. Do you remember all the wine bars we frequented ( well some of us did) in the mid 1980's. These used to occupy the same cultural space as the new coffee shops - this fad passed away and the coffee shops will also decline, giving way to another social spark that will get us together and keep us chattering !.

Well, you might have to go down the road to Kirkdale as '161 Food + Drink' will be opening very soon. I'm reliably informed that this will indeed be a wine (and craft beer) bar.....with, errr, food too as the name suggests.

A friend at work has just mentioned this - apparently it's owned by Simon from Trev and Simon. So I'm definitely going to check it out!! (Am I showing my age?)

If we're talking wine bars then the quintessential one locally for me is in Crofton Pk - Mr Lawrence.
Next door is the much-bearded beer haunt, London Beer Dispensary (where Mr L wine bar was, somewhat confusingly if you've already had a few).

Finding out that we have Simon opening a cafe and Trevor painting it, I was giddy with excitement (may have been so giddy I have Simon and Trevor mixed up) who can think of Simon and Trevor without that warm feeling appearing... but seriously worried now. Given From the Forest shut due I'm assuming in part to the competition, 3 decent coffee shops remain. Can Forest Hill support another one? I hope either I am wrong or that the Archie Parker diversifies... Good Luck

Is Simon and Trevor code or does this mean something? Who are/were they? Bit of a funny place for another cafe - not exactly mainstream up there is it?

Perfect place for a new cafe. It will pick up trade from the pools. It hasn't been 'mainstream' in the past, but there's plenty up there now.
Google 'Trevor and Simon' if you want to know who they are.

I've heard that Ken and Eddie Kennedy are taking over the barber's shop.

Archie Parker is now open. Who will be first to pop in and report back to the forum?

Looks like they might have opened yesterday, but I popped in for lunch today. Very welcoming, good menu of mainly sandwiches on a choice of breads. A 'salad of the day', various cakes and crumpets also available. Great job with the interior, finishing touches still being made.
I think they plan to open every day other than Sundays, but don't quote me on that. Would be nice to have somewhere open on Mondays when much of the rest of FH seems to have their day off.
